Selection of the National Award-winning director’s movie into the Oscars race not only maybe a landmark moment for Odia cinema but also symbolizes the necessity for content that moves the audience and leaves them thinking.
Nila Madhav Panda’s first Odia film ‘Kalira Atita’ has made its entry into the distinguished Academy Awards race within the general category for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director among the opposite categories.
The film, starring Pitobash Tripathy in lead, showcases the impact of global climate change and the way it impacts a person who lost his family and residence to the ocean. The film emphasizes the tough reality of global climate change and rising sea levels, taking villages of India’s eastern coastline into context. Panda is known for highlighting environmental and societal concerns through his movies.
Talking concerning the Oscars entry, Nila says, “It was a little tough due to the COVID-19 pandemic as theatres are enclosing Los Angeles and New York, this year. So, we had to travel digitally as per the procedures. Now, the film has been approved and is out there at the Academy Screening Room (ASR). Once the film is out there at ASR, now we've to start out campaigning for the film in LA. Besides, there's a worldwide Odia society, which is promoting the film. From the local to the worldwide level, we've to succeed in getting people to support us. We've finalized the workplace in LA and that they will start the promotions soon.”
Earlier, the movie had been selected at the Indian Panorama Section at the 51st International Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The journey for this film began when Nila noticed a photograph of a pump during a newspaper in 2006. He was shocked to ascertain the pump drowned within the ocean, and therefore the image confirmed the horrifying reality of sea ingression to him. Nila says that he has adopted the story of sea ingression over time. He didn’t suit any screenplay or story for this film, however, took his crew to the affected areas in Kendrapara district in Odisha, and shot the film without make-up, units and lights.
Sharing this big moment and expressing his happiness, director Nila Madhav Panda wrote on Twitter, “In a year full of challenges, feel extremely happy to announce #KaliraAtita has made its entry into the Oscar race in general entry category 4 Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director & many other categories. It’s being made available for academy screening, Grateful to everyone”
